Coral Castles 

Darlin’ should’ve sown your seed tonight 

That hungry harvest needs another bite 

And though that salty surge has taken you up from the mountain side 

Still darling, I’ll see your carried out with the tide To a place beyond the light of the maple flairs 

Where top gallant sails pierce the moon as they duel with the open air 

I know I’ll never find the words to make you stay 

Feels a part of you is always cast away 

But if your mind could one day find its way back into port 

And just one night relieve us of the thought 

To a place beyond the light of the hearth and home 

There’s a field of stars beneath your feet but do you ever feel alone? 

Cos there, down and down, beneath the crowning foam 

Unfathomable and fallible a garnished garnet throne 

Standing guard in an oceanic womb 

Say, surely that ain’t the same stone as your tomb 

So climb aboard beneath the billowing sails 

Softer than the back of the pale white whale 

And with her bones so bright she’ll keep you safe tonight 

Gonna keep you safe till the morning comes 

Lift your arms, show them both to me 

A little white shell which you stole from the sea 

And among the leeward lashings of the waves forever more 

Hark! A voice comes rolling ‘cross the shore 

Ooooohhh ooooohh  oohhhh 

And if a pebble can skip surely I can run 

Clear across the borders of a melting sun 

And with body churning, the leviathan dives 

Settin places at a banquet with harpoons and knives 

And though the undulating crops of your country side 

Yield never to the salt on their golden hides 

Will you lift your fingers to the coarse palms of mine 

And we’ll dance with our veins burning, and our blood full of brine 

Come on, dance lil darlin’, dance in the nautical fire 

And with our eyes pointing skyward like a narwhals tusk 

We’ll sail east of the mornin’ and west of the dusk.

 

Undertow

I’m walking in the dark 

Ridges and railway lines 

Sure to get lost in this oncoming frost 

Heaving, contorting through the pines 

And it’s colder than it seems….. 

                  

I’m howling in the dark 

The wild dogs follow me 

But don’t chew the bones of another bone chewer 

When the frost bites enough 

Hear my words till they fade 

A beacon of fire swallowed by haze 

Before the colour starts to fade 

From the edges of the stars 

Before my body breaks away 

  

And is pulled down by the undertow 

Into the big dark belly below 

By the undertow 

I’m running through the dark 

Something awakens from the deep 

Still no cold feet, yet all courage retreats 

Among sights ungodly and unknown 

Perhaps I was wrong perhaps I shouldn’t have strayed 

But be them right or wrong, all plans become unmade 

I’m lying in the dark 

It arches over me 

Shapes moving in and they crawl in their skins 

Between the burgundy 

Best you go now, run along son 

Gold tinted footfalls never last long 

My god man, what came over you? 

What did you see? 

With the curling of the lip of a rip tide 

Comes and take you away 

Before the colour starts to fade 

From the edges of the stars 

Before my body breaks away   

And is pulled down by the undertow 

Into the big dark belly below

Mountain Town, After Dusk

 Painted toenail of a looming mountain 

Snow capped and wet at the jaw 

And by the road signs guttural roars 

Fueled by coal spat out from the gutless maw 

But there’s something in these ghostly streetlights 

Flooding the town after dusk 

That murmurs lives of those around 

You only see from afar 

You only see from where you are 

Porchlight, lamplight, passing car 

So drive on, 

Drive on 

Be gone 

Every flicker leaks another story 

And I think about the ways of which they came 

But this affection seems a hollow claim 

If you passed, I doubt id even ask your name 

But there’s something in these ghostly streetlights 

Flooding the town after dusk 

That murmurs lives of those around 

You only see from afar 

You only see from where you are 

Porchlight, lamplight, passing car 

So disappear 

Fade from the rearview mirror 

Though your fortunes may bring you far 

You only see from where you are
